Student Representative Council

We have an active SRC, with two students elected from Years 2 – 6 for each semester. The SRC makes decisions on issues such as improvements/changes to the school, supporting worthy charities and gathering opinions of other students. The SRC meets once a week.

Debating

The debating group meets regularly with Ms Crawford. The group brainstorms an issue. The children then prepare their arguments in small groups at school, either as the negative or affirmative team. This can then be refined at home.

The school is currently entered in the Western Sydney Region friendly debating competition where we compete with neighbouring schools.

Through debating students learn self confidence, public speaking and how to argue a case as well as the valuable skill of rebuttal. Students learn to see other points of view, develop positive team skills and have fun at the same time.

Choir

If you are ever walking past the hall and hear the sound of beautiful voices, you are probably listening to Westmead's Junior or Senior Choir! Both choirs meet weekly. They sing a variety of songs, from old favourites to more modern compositions. The choirs perform at school events such as the Anzac Day ceremony, Open Day and Presentation Days.

In 2009, Westmead's Senior Choir will be part of the Combined Schools' Choir who will perform at the Celebrating the Arts Festival at Parramatta Riverside Theatre. They will also sing at a Senior Citizens' Week function and the Rejoice Australia Festival.

Band

The school band meets weekly after school  for rehearsals. The band is a very popular activity within the school and places do get filled rapidly.   The students perform at school assemblies and presentation days in and out of school. All instrumental tutorial groups meet during school time.

Guitar Club

The Guitar Club meets once a week at lunch time. There is an average of 10 students in the group from Years 3-6. Some students have been attending for up to two years and can play guitar quite well. The guitar club has tuition from a professional musician, Mr Hutchinson, who is a teacher on the school staff. Mr Filpi also assists with the club.

Recorder Group

Westmead PS has two recorder groups. There is an advanced group and a beginner group. Each group meets once a week. The advanced group has performed at stage assemblies, Open Day, Award Presentations and for the past four years at the Festival of Instrumental Music for Recorders at the Sydney Opera House.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is held every week for Stage 2 and 3 students. Students learn how to write interesting speeches on a set topic. They practice these speeches in front of friends and gain confidence to perform in front of larger audiences.

Students learn the importance of eye contact, controlled pace, gesture, facial expressions, asking questions and body posture. When students master these techniques, they get to improvise or “make up” speeches about new topics within five minutes.

Our Public Speakers attend the Sydney Eisteddfod in Term 2 every year.

Art club

Art Club at Westmead Public School provides an excellent opportunity for the students from Years 3-6 who are passionate about art and enjoy the peace and tranquility during art sessions. Students examine and appreciate different styles of artwork created by great artists. They use a wide range of art mediums, such as pencil sketching, water and acrylic painting and collages. It is a delight to see students gaining confidence and producing a higher standard of artwork using originality and ideas through their artwork. They learn to critically analyse their own work and continuously make efforts for self improvement. They choose a wide range of interesting topics from still life to indigenous Aboriginal art.

Art Club meets once a week from 1 -2 pm.

Dance

Every Friday morning, the Dance Group meets with Mrs Carney and Miss Dobbins. They perform at various events throughout the year, including the Celebrating the Arts Festival at the Riverside Theatre.
